Are you a nice person?

It’s not rocket science : you get as you give. Being liked is up to you. How you treat people and how you are determines whether people want to spend time with you, are happy to see you, or are avoiding you like the plague. Both play a role: How you treat people and how you are. Just treating people in a nice, polite, courteous manner is not going to want them to be around you if you always look depressed or bore them to death with minute details about your life.

Here is a little checklist of things that will put you in the plague category:

  • Attempting to control people with the use of emotional blackmail or manipulation.

  • Always knowing better, telling others how they should do things, or even feel.

  • Being a nag (never ending faultfinding, complaints, or demands).

  • Being negative.

  • Going on and on about yourself, or people / interests you care about.

  • Being emotionally unstable: people never know in what mood you will be.

  • Not keeping your word.

  • Treating others with disrespect / talking down to them.

  • Being selfish and inconsiderate of others’ feelings, time, and well-being.

  • Gossiping and back-biting.

  • Not keeping a confidence.

  • Going around with a depressed demeanor.

  • Constant complaining.

  • Continuing with a habit or mannerism people already told you they find annoying.

  • Disliking people - even if you don’t say it, people are expert body language readers.

  • Making people feel unsafe around you as you oscillate between being friendly and attacking them.

Here is another bit of simple math: if one person doesn’t like you, most likely, that person has an issue. But if just about everybody you meet doesn’t like you - again, not rocket science people.

So are you a nice person? Does your personality, and the way you treat others, create an inviting environment in which others want to be? If not, why not? Life is so short and filled with so much hurt and heartache, why not use your time on earth to make the world a better place?
